Invisible – Valentine’s Day Love Story

“She’s so pretty and nice. And popular,” Jason turned to his best friend and sighed,”She would never go out with me!”

Elizabeth nodded as she continued her doodling.

“Liz! Are you even listening?!”

“Huh? What? Oh uh, yeah totally,”Liz smiled. When she saw Jason’s face she sighed,”It’s just that you always talk about how amazing Alice is and after awhile…It gets a little boring.”

Jason smirked,”I’m supposed to bore you. You’re my best friend! And if you help me ask out Alice,”he paused, glancing fervently at the her,”then I won’t bug you about it anymore okay?”

Liz frowned. Couldn’t he see that she liked him?She tried dropping hints but it never worked. He was clueless. Liz wanted to be a supportive friend but really? She didn’t want to play matchmaker for the guy she liked and some other girl!

“Huh? Wha-?”

“Are you gonna help me or not?” Jason frowned. Liz quickly thought over the situation and decided to “help” him. The only reason I’m going to say yes is so I can keep tabs on him and make sure his plan doesn’t actually work, Liz thought. She felt kinda bad, but shrugged it off. She nodded at Jason and he grinned.

When Jason came to school the next day, he was filled with dread. When he had woken up that morning, he couldn’t wait to ask out Alice. But as he got ready for school, he began to rethink his entire idea. He was insane for thinking he could ask out someone so popular when he was just a shy, nerdy kid that no one even noticed. Except for Liz, he reminded himself. He smiled. She had always been there for him. Liz was pretty and sweet. She deserved something nice. Or someone nice. I’m going to get Liz a boyfriend! Jason laughed at his crazy idea, but smiled. Liz would be so happy. And when he and Alice started going out they could go on double dates and stuff.

Just then, Liz walked up to him. “Hey!” she squealed with fake perkiness,”Ready for the plan?”

“No,”Jason sighed.

“Oh well!” Liz grabbed his arm and began pulling him down the hall, towards Alice’s locker. Jason thought he heard her mutter,”Let’s get this over with,” but he couldn’t be sure. She had a smile on her face but it was obviously fake. She wasn’t happy about this. Jason wondered why. Oh well. Once I introduce her to someone, she’ll be happy, he thought as she dragged him down the hall.

“Here we are! Alice’s locker,”Liz said and gestured towards the locker unenthusiastically. As Jason rummaged through his backpack she blurted out,”Do you really think this will work?” Jason looked at her like she was crazy, and she immediately regretted asking.

“Of course it’ll work,”He said, looking at her uncertainly, like he was waiting for her to reassure him.

Liz frowned. “Yeah. You’re right,”she said,”I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“Thank you,”Jason smirked as he pulled out the note. After quickly scanning the hall, he shoved it in Alice’s locker. Just in time too. Alice came walking down the hall with her two best friends right as Liz and Jason walked off. Liz left and went to her locker but Jason waited behind to see if Alice would see his note. He watched, holding his breath, as she opened her locker. The note fell out of it and one of her friends scooped it up.

She asked what it was, but Alice just answered that she didn’t know. Alice took it from her friend and read the note. Jason lost his nerve and ran off.

When Jason, Liz, and Michael, one of their friends, were eating lunch, Alice got up from her table and began walking over. Alone. Without any of her friends trailing her.

“Hey Jason look!” Michael grinned and nudged his friend,”Your girlfriend’s coming over to see you”.

Jason blushed and looked at his sandwich, muttering,”She’s not my girlfriend”. Liz sighed and stared at Alice as she weaved between lunch tables.

“Hi Jason! I got your note and,” she paused for a few seconds and smiled,”I would love to go to the dance with you.”

Liz gasped, then caught herself and turned it into a cough. Michael grinned and slapped Jason on the back.

Jason finally got over his shock and smiled nervously. He stuttered,“Really? Are you serious? Because you don’t have to if you don’t-”

“I’ll see you there,” Alice said. Then she turned and walked back to her table.

“Wow,”Liz said to Jason as they walked home together, ”You’re going to the dance with Alice. That’s great.”

“You make it sound like I’m going to the dance with our teacher,”Jason laughed,”Why don’t you like Alice?”

“I like Alice. Why wouldn’t I like her?” Liz said.

“Ohhhhhhhhhh,”Jason said slowly, smiling,”I know why you aren’t happy. You don’t like that Alice and I are going to the dance together.”

Finally he realizes that I like him! “And why is that?”Liz asked.

“Because you don’t have a date to the dance,”Jason grinned knowingly,”But don’t worry. You’re nice, pretty, and smart. Someone will definitely ask you before the dance.”

Liz smiled faintly and didn’t say anything more as they walked home.

That night, Liz lay awake on her bed, thinking. Jason called me nice, pretty, and smart. And yet he still doesn’t realize that I want him to ask me to the dance! She sighed and turned off her light, finally going to bed.

The day before the dance Alice walked up to Jason.

“Hey Jason,”she said.

“Oh hey Alice,”he said, trying to act cool, even though a lot of people were watching them intently.

“Uh…There’s something I have to tell you,”she said uncomfortably, avoiding his eyes and looking down the hall.

“What is it?”

“I can’t go to the dance with you,”
“What? Why?”

Alice explained that her brother was visiting from college and she wanted to spend time with him because she never got to see him.

“I’m so sorry,”Alice said.

“Ah, it’s okay,”Jason smiled slightly,”I have to go to my locker before first period. Have fun with your brother okay?” Before Alice could say anything, he rushed off.

After school, the next day, Liz’s phone rang while she was eating.

“What? Er’m kinder in the murdle of someching,”Liz answered as she ate her Frosted Flakes.

“Hey Liz? It’s Jason”,he said, sounding sad.

Liz nearly spit out her cereal. She chewed quickly and swallowed. “Hey Jason. What’s up?” she asked.

“Well, Alice can’t go to the dance with me because her brother’s visiting from college and she wants to spend as much time as she can with him because she never gets to see him,”Jason sighed.

“Oh. Sorry about that. Are you alright?,” Liz frowned. He sounded so sad that she felt bad for him, even though he was sad about another girl.

Jason cleared his throat,”I’m okay, really.” Liz felt even worse. He obviously wasn’t okay.

“Well, you should still go to the dance. I’ll go too, if you go,”Liz said.

“Maybe. No one asked you to the dance?” Jason asked, sweetly concerned.

“Not really,” Liz said, mentally adding three guys asked me, but I told them no because of you.

“Really?” Jason sounded really surprised,”I thought for sure that someone would’ve asked you.”

Liz laughed,”It’s not that surprising. So are you going to the dance? I need time to find a dress and stuff if you are.”

“Well that depends.”

“On what?”

“Will you go to the dance with me?”

“As your friend?”

Jason laughed,”For crying out loud! Liz, I want you to go with me as my date!”

Did he just ask me to go to the dance with him?! Liz was so happy and confused that she didn’t know what to say. So she yelled,”Yes!” into the receiver.

“Okay, see you there!”Jason said, right before Liz hung up. She put down the phone, walked calmly to her room, where she promptly jumped up and down on her bed, screaming for the next fifteen minutes.

Liz got ready and biked, in her dress, to the school. She took a deep breath and went into the auditorium.

“Hey!” Jason said, immediately spotting her,”Wow. You look great.”
“Thanks, but not really. I just threw on the first dress I saw,” Liz smiled.

“C’mon,” Jason said, and pulled her towards their friends.

Liz had an amazing time at the dance. She and Jason danced, even though they were both pretty bad at it. They talked, laughed, and ate the heart shaped cookies that the faculty had set out on the tables.

At the end of the night, on the way to Liz’s house, Jason said,”I’m actually really happy that I went to the dance with you instead of Alice. I don’t think I would’ve had as much fun with her.”

Liz smiled happily,”Yeah I had a great time.”

“You know Liz,”he continued,”I actually liked you for a long time. I just figured that since you were so nice and pretty and stuff, someone better liked you too, so I just gave up. Alice seems nice but I don’t really remember why I began liking her.”

“I liked you too, but you just didn’t seem to realize that,” Liz said.

“I’m glad I finally did,” Jason said, smiling, as they finally reached Liz’s house.

As she walked up her driveway Liz thought, wow that really was the perfect end to the perfect night. She smiled and went into her house.##
