Do you know what Valentines Day is? Yeah, you probably know. It is the day of love. The day to spend with your loved one. Maybe buy him or her a card. Get your valentine a stuffed bear, or candies. Maybe even go on a romantic date. Or the young kids, it might just be a day to bring pretty cards for the class. But do you know the history?
The Feast of Saint Valentines, Saint Valentines Day, or just plain Valentines Day are some of the names of this holiday. It is the celebration of love and affection. The usual celebrations include sending gifts, Valentines Day began as a celebration of one for more of the Christian saints Valentinus, for The Valentine of Rome. It is said that Valentinus was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry.
Also, Valentinus ministered to persecuted Christians. The Christians were persecuted under the Roman Empire. In this legend, supposedly Valentinus healed the daughter of Asterius. Asterius was his jailer. According to the legend, Valentinus sent a letter to the jailer’s daughter before his execution. As a farewell, the letter was signed, ‘Your Valentine’. Now, in his honor, they celebrate it around the world!
Nowadays, people may not go to the religious celebrations, but they keep the love part alive. They give cards, write poems, go on dates. . . the list is infinite. The main candy or this day is CHOCOLATE! Also those little candy hearts. The children tend to give cards, but care mostly about the candies. But teens and grownups tend to be more. . . romantic.
There are many things that people can do to celebrate this holiday. If you don’t necessarily want to do the religious stuff, you can just do the lovey dovey things. This is a day to be happy. Not sad. It’s a day to spend with the people you love. So bring your valentine cards and chocolates! This Valentines day in 2014 will be a good and happy one!
